I would recommend a technique known as shadowing. In order for this to work, you would have to find other cardinal fans in the area and ask them if you could observe them using this website. By using this method, not only would we find out what part of the website attracts them first but also what links are never viewed by the user. You would also be able to note what parts of the website trouble the user and ask them why they do not understand it. By shadowing, you get to see the user in person completing tasks given rather then sending out a survey and wondering if it will ever be filled out or taken seriously.
